Green Tarp Diptych:

(Left)

"BUT WHAT IS A WEED?"

(Right)

"A weed is simply something you don't want in your garden."

2023

Repurposed tarps, repurposed drainage pipes, acrylic, screws, twine, staples, repurposed garden hoses

She inspires me to dig through the dirt--

Find the irrigation system that used to support the flowers of my garden--

I turned off sections of the system when I was told,

a plant at a time, that all I was watering was a weed.

But what is a weed?

A weed is simply something you don’t want in your garden.

Here, the metaphor references water, the life source of all living things, and the conduit that determines what receives the support to grow.

I have transformed repurposed landscaping tarps into textiles using traditional handcraft techniques, like weaving and smocking. The process of unraveling creates something new.

This work references Penelope from Homer's Odyssey. In the story, Penelope’s husband Odysseus has died in battle and suitors arrive to win her hand. Penelope delays them saying she will remarry when she has finished weaving the burial shawl for her father-in-law. Penelope maintains her faithfulness by unraveling her weaving at night. My unraveling method is an exercise in loyalty to certain concepts I am interested in, despite their lack of explicit value.
