Rubbings from city drain covers arranged according to the Cathedral Window quilt pattern

2024

Paper, acrylic, wax crayon, oil pastel, textures from city drain covers

I produced this work by returning to multiple city drain covers and rubbing crayons and oil pastels over their textured surfaces. The arrangement of the drain covers references the Cathedral Window Quilt pattern, which is distinguished by these interlacing circular shapes.

The human body is invoked by the quilt form––a covering intended to keep someone warm––and by the drain covers, designed for a human body to fit through. In this way, the drain covers provide a metaphorical portal to those things related to human existence, like emotions and spirituality, which lay beneath or beyond the surface.
